Literature Review: Part 1 – Preliminary Outline Assignment Instructions

Overview

You are well on your way to creating your own literature review for a research topic you have chosen. As you are reading and taking notes on relevant and foundational sources from topics and sub-topics, an outline is likely to take shape.

This assignment is intended to provide you with clarification and organization as you progress toward the draft of your literature review you will write through the remainder of this course. The assignment also provides opportunity to receive instructor feedback in the process of preparing to write the literature review.

Instructions

Create a preliminary outline for your literature review. The outline should include the major topics and sub-topics you plan to include. You must also include two to three sources for each literature review stream/topic and subtopic section of the review you will write. The sources should be written in APA reference format within the outline.

Include an APA formatted title page. Also include one to two paragraphs describing the research problem, your research purpose, and research questions on a page prior to the outline. The outline must follow the requirements of a Chapter 2 from the Christian Leadership Doctoral Programs Handbook. These requirements include: Theological Framework, Theoretical Framework, Related Literature, Rationale for the Study, and Gap in the Literature. The outline should be a minimum of two pages (single-spaced).

1. Title page (APA formatted)

2. First page (should include: 1-2 paragraphs describing your research problem, your research purpose statement and research questions)

3. The outline (a minimum of 2 pages single-spaced)

See the description above for further understanding of the outline requirements and expectations.

Literature Map Alternative Instructions

For those that tend to be more visual, you can choose to do a literature map of your literature review instead of a linear outline described above. If you choose this option, you will create a visual map of your literature review (chapter 2 of the dissertation). Think of the map as a visual representation of the outline to chapter 2. This could be in the style of a concept or mind map. Visually represent each of the major topics and sub-topics you plan to include, representing possible interrelationships. Include two to three foundational sources (author and date only) for each literature stream/topic or sub-topic.

Include a title page in APA format, and the first page prior to the map itself should include one to two paragraphs describing the research problem, your research purpose and possible research questions. The map must follow the requirements of a Chapter 2 from the Christian Leadership Doctoral Programs Handbook. These requirements include: Theological Framework, Theoretical Framework, Related Literature, Rationale for the Study, and Gap in the Literature. The map itself must include the research purpose visually.

1. Title page (APA formatted)

2. First page (should include: 1-2 paragraphs describing your research problem, your research purpose statement and research questions)

3. The map (should include the research purpose)

See the description above for further understanding of the map requirements and expectations.

Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
