Week 7 Pick Your Pathogen Paper requirements:
Choose a newspaper article and summarize it (week 1)
Use the TEXTBOOK or other sources to describe the taxonomy and features of the chosen microbe
All the following criteria are met:
1) Paper includes supporting details and/or examples from lecture material and/or text
2) The following should be included:
• A.) morphology (discussion week 1), cellular characteristics (discussion week 2), and gram stain (discussion week 1) characteristics, virulence factors (discussion week 2),
• b) susceptibility to antibiotics (discussion week 4),
• c) host cells, nutritional needs, growth conditions (discussion week 3),
• d) how it evades the immune system and mode of invasion into the host(s) (discussion week 5)
• e) interactions with the hosts and diseases caused and body systems that are affected (discussion week 5)
• f) symptoms when the pathogen infects a host (discussion week 6),
• g) diagnosis and therapeutic intervention needed (discussion week 6)
3) Connection to the health/nursing field made (discussion week 6)
Abstract: Week 7
Post the following in the discussions as initial post or follow-up options for students. Provide specific feedback to students each week. Students can submit the completed papers by Sunday of Week 7 (before the final exam).
WEEK 1: MICROSCOPY
Choose a pathogen to research this session (see Week 7 Pick Your Pathogen assignment) and locate a newspaper article about the pathogen or a disease it causes. Summarize the article in 6-8 sentences.
What staining and microscope is best used to see that pathogen? What would your microorganism look like (morphology)? Your response should be a minimum of 5-6 sentences (100-200 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 2: Characteristics of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic Cells
Using your pathogen chosen in the Week 1 discussion, describe its cellular characteristics. Describe which of these structures are used to help it attach/invade/survive in the host. Your response should be a minimum of 5-6 sentences (100-200 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 3: Culturing microorganisms
Using your pathogen from the last two weeks, research and describe the ideal growth conditions of your pathogen. What terms learned this week would describe its ideal growth conditions? What is the nutritional mode of your microorganism? What are the host cells for your pathogen? Your response should be a minimum of 5-6 sentences (100-200 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 4: Controlling Microbial Growth
Using your pathogen from the last three weeks, research and describe the antimicrobials used to destroy your pathogen, if any. What is the mode of action of that antimicrobial? Is your pathogen resistant to any antimicrobial?
If no antimicrobials are available for your pathogen, how is the infection treated?
Your response should be a minimum of 5-6 sentences (100-200 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 5: Adaptive Immunity
Trace the invasion and evasion of the pathogen you chose in Week 1. How does your chosen pathogen invade/enter the body? Which body system(s) does your pathogen affect? What are the defenses of that system that the pathogen must overcome (include innate and adaptive defenses)? How does the pathogen evade/avoid the host’s immune system defenses to survive? Your response should be a minimum of 6-8 sentences (150-250 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 6: Epidemiology
Discuss the signs, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of your pathogen chosen in week 1. What signs/symptoms are characteristic of the disease? What are the unique virulence factors of the pathogen that give this pathophysiological response? Your response should be a minimum of 5-6 sentences (100-200 words) and include specific references from Edapt, lecture, or the textbook.
WEEK 7: Pathogens
We have discussed the cellular characteristics of the pathogen you chose in Week 1 over the last few weeks. Now you will summarize the most important points to remember about (1) the newspaper article you chose in week 1, as well as (2) the pathogen’s the cellular characteristics and the disease it causes. This should be an overall summary of the key features to remember. This should be 6-8 sentences, and around 250-300 words.
After you have completed this summary, use it for your abstract in your Week 7 Pick Your Pathogen Paper. Use this with the other discussions you have written to complete, correct, and submit your paper by the end of this week.
