This is an example of a systemic causal loop diagram used to describe an issue one company was facing with a loss of productivity due to absenteeism. The causal loop diagram (CLD) and a detailed description can be found in the article
Causal Loop Diagram: Little Known Analytical Tool (
)  by William Rushing. Analyze this diagram read the article and complete an SBAR analysis on one of the reinforcing loops.

Use this Structure:

Situation: Give a description of the problem or situation – start with one of the nodes supply enough details using sentences and paragraphs and add details to provide content. For example, don’t just put “productivity” in the situation section, add a description of productivity. You can also apply this to a specific healthcare or business example.

Background: Describe any context or background to the problem by describing the reinforcing loop. Follow the loop around back to the node you chose for the situation. Again, don’t just copy the node (“Perceived Training Requirement” then “Number of Employees in Training”), give detail and context, and be sure to add in the increasing or reducing effects.

Analysis: Give a detailed and thoughtful analysis of the situation based on the impact of the reinforcing loop. Use the information presented in this class to frame the issue and lay out an approach.

Recommendation: Offer specific solutions or recommendations based on the analysis or by examining other loops (or you can propose your own)

Executive summary statement (put this at the beginning): Write a 2-3 sentence summary of the most important points/topics you wrote about in the analysis. Include details that are critical to understanding these topic

Purpose: You may be required to inform a healthcare leader of the result of a causal loop diagram that reviews the systemic impacts on an issue like productivity or absenteeism. Providing an analysis that describes the diagram details demonstrates your knowledge and ability to apply these skills. Be sure to include enough details in the SBAR to describe the context, the analysis, and how to apply these to your systemic issue. In your Executive Summary, be concise and condense your report into a brief statement that a healthcare executive can understand quickly. 

 

Criteria for Success:

Use the SBAR format to describe a problem with loss of productivity and absenteeism using a causal loop diagram (CLD), the factors that influence the problem, and your recommendation. Also, provide an Executive Summary that condenses your analysis into a brief statement.
