Dear Lori Lightfoot,
As an engaged member of our community, I am grateful for the work you do in representing our interests in Chicago. I believe that fostering open and inclusive dialogue between citizens and elected officials is essential for the success of our democratic system. I encourage you to consider adopting innovative approaches to citizen engagement, moving beyond traditional public hearings. Citizen engagement is the activity that facilitates the exchange of information between members of the public and policymakers. Initiatives like “making public participation legal” have succeeded in other regions, offering a framework for more dynamic and meaningful conversations. It aims to change antiquated laws that force governments to let public input solely through tedious, scripted public hearings instead of encouraging real communication (Schooler, 2021).
Some cities have concentrated on facilitated conversations and online forums and have proven effective in allowing diverse voices to be heard. Neutral facilitators in these cities have guided respectful discussions and led to a deeper understanding of various perspectives. I believe these approaches can strengthen the connection between our community and elected representatives. Furthermore, you can consider embracing more inclusive practices in order to enhance the democratic process and mitigate potential financial burdens associated with poor public participation. This includes avoiding costs related to off-cycle recall elections, legal challenges, and public unrest.
As the mayor, you should consider these changes and seek ways to involve citizens in decision-making. This will help contribute to a more vibrant and responsive democratic governance that represents the needs and aspirations of our community.
Thank you for being so dedicated in serving our community. I look forward to witnessing positive advancements in our government’s approach to citizen participation.
Yours sincerely,
