Course Competency:
· Analyze the increased complexity of care among older adults.
Your supervisor needs to make sure that each of the in-service topics will be covered by someone, so she is asking the staff to communicate their topic preference. Below is the list of problems your supervisor wants the nursing staff to be able to teach older adult clients (and/or their family members) about.
In-service Topic Options:
· Hypertension
· Diabetes
· Coronary artery disease
· Depression
· Dementia
· Polypharmacy
· Increased risk of falls
· Vison/hearing impairment
· Nutrition and hydration
Your supervisor has asked you to submit a 1-page proposal, written using proper spelling, grammar, and APA, which addresses the following:
1. Identify the client problem your in-service will address.
1. Describe at least 5 consequences of the client problem as it relates to the health, safety, and well-being of older adults.
1. Explain your rationale for choosing the client problem you selected.
Submit your completed assignment to the drop box below. Please check the
Course Calendar for specific due dates.
Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

Giving supplemental oxygen to patients at risk of respiratory compromise, resulting in low blood oxygen levels, has become ubiquitous when treating them (O’Driscoll & Smith, 2019). Meeting the oxygenation needs of such patients is critical for ensuring that their physiological need for breathing, which is pivotal to their survival, is guaranteed. After meeting the need for oxygenation, the next priority would be ensuring proper hydration and nutrition. Oxygen administration can be complex and reduce oral intake in patients undergoing oxygen therapy. Thus, it is essential to ensure that the rest of the patient’s physiological needs, including food and water intake, are met.
An unanticipated change in a client’s health status may lead to prioritization of physiological needs over other needs. When complications arise, nurse practitioners must ensure that basic survival needs are first met before attempting to ascend the hierarchy of needs (Hayre-Kwan et al., 2021). According to Ozodboyeva (2022), an individual’s basic needs have priority since other needs become apparent only after these basic needs are met. Thus, unforeseen changes in a patient will necessitate their continued stay at the base of the needs pyramid until there is marked improvement in their health with all their physiological needs already catered for before advancing to the next tier. Actions that a nurse could take to assist with a patient who develops respiratory difficulty after being on oxygen therapy include obtaining a prescription for oxygen, timely instituting oxygen therapy, and assisting the patient in improving their respiratory function via breathing exercises.
