Completing your assignment

What am I required to do in this assignment?

For this assignment you are required to:

Consider the feedback that you have received for your first attempt and improve your 3 000-word essay accordingly (your essay should include images and references, and addresses a clearly defined research question, one which has been selected in negotiation with your subject tutor).
Your submission ought to evidence such improvements and developments by colour coding any changes and additions that you have made.

What do I need to do to pass? How do I achieve a good grade?

The Unit Information Form states the Threshold Expectations that inform both you and markers what is the minimum needed to be demonstrated to pass the assessment. They should, therefore, answer the question “What do I need to do pass?”. During the assessment introductory session, you should be given the opportunity to check your understanding of the threshold statements and what you need to do to surpass them.

The assessment marking criteria listed below show how your work is assessed. The assessment criteria are informed by the unit’s learning outcomes and the assessment task. Carefully reading the assessment criteria should help you understand the aspects that will be used to judge your progress and achievement of the learning outcomes and offer guidance on “how do I achieve a good grade”.

In order to pass Assessment 2 you will need to:

1/ Apply personal research in an art and design context in the production of a written document.
2/ Articulate a coherent rationale using selected material.
3/ Evidence independent engagement with ideas in research and practice.

4/ Include and apply appropriate referencing.

In order to achieve a good grade you need to:

-Develop an in-depth research on your chosen topic which is related to your specialism.
-Your research needs to be informed by relevant theoretical and practical frameworks and sources of references.
-You need to attend scheduled lectures, seminars and workshops on a regular basis and pro-actively seek feedback from your tutors and peers.
It is essential that you reflect on this feedback and implement the actions that are relevant to the development of your work.
-Your essay needs to be coherently structured, well-written, illustrated with relevant visual materials, and referenced appropriately using the Harvard Referencing system.

ART030-3 Essay Structure

Your essay should be clearly structured into clearly defined parts:

1/ An introduction (about 400-500 words)

In the introduction, you need to contextualize your chosen topic and clearly formulate one (or more) research question(s), which will provide the critical and theoretical framework of your essay. After formulating your research question(s), you need to introduce how you will develop it/them within your essay. You do so by briefly announcing and summarising the different parts of the main body of your essay.

2/ A main body (about 2 000 words)

The main body of your essay needs to be clearly structured into a number of different (and inter-related) parts, which will develop one or more particular aspects of your research question. You can use sub-titles and clearly layout your parts to provide an immediate sense of structure.

In each section, you need to underpin your argument through the critical analyses of specific artefacts/artworks/case studies, which are relevant to your research question. You need to include and appropriately reference the sources and images that you discuss. You need to use relevant references and sources to contextualise and critically position your analysis and arguments within one (or more) critical and/or theoretical framework(s). You need to sequence the different sections of the main body of your essay in a rational and coherent manner-consider where your argument should start, where it should lead, what are the different steps needed in between and what are the most relevant examples/case studies that you can analyse and discuss within each section-. You should also consider and discuss how the different parts of your essay relate to each other. You can do so in your introduction and conclusion but also within the main body of your essay, for instance by writing transitions paragraphs in between your different parts.

3/ Conclusion (about 300-400 words)

In your conclusion, you should summarise, synthetise and contextualise your research and its findings.
You could also open up the discussion by suggesting aspects of your topic that could be further developed in the future.

It is essential that you reference your sources using the Harvard Referencing Systems.

How does this assignment relate to ‘my learning in this unit and help me develop knowledge and skills that I will need for my future?

The lecture series will present you with a series of critical and creative contexts that illustrates the relationships between theory and practice in Art and Design. These critical and creative contexts will be illustrated by and discussed through specific examples of Art and Design practices, and will serve as models and sources of inspiration on how to approach your own essay and its relationships with your specialism. A series of seminar sessions will support you in your research and critical skills and to discuss your work in progress with your tutors and peers.
